Why run a mechanic out of a van instead of a building?

Because most of what goes wrong with a vehicle can be fixed where it is parked, and the customer's time is the one thing a shop cannot give back. A dead battery in a Garland driveway, a brake job on a truck in a Mesquite office lot, a key programmed in a Plano garage: none of these needs a lift, and all of them need a technician with the right tools, the right parts and a flat spot. A van carries the first two to the third.

The building a shop pays for is also the biggest line on its invoices. Without rent on a bay, the cost of a mobile visit is the technician's time and the trip, and the trip is folded into the published ranges inside the radius. Customers pay for the repair and the knowledge, not the square footage.

The honest limit is work that genuinely needs a lift for hours or a press. The service pages say where that line sits, and when a diagnosis lands on the far side of it you get the findings in writing and a realistic shop range, which is cheaper than finding out at a shop.

What rides in the van?

Diagnostic tools come first: brand-level scan tools for Ford, GM, Stellantis, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia and the other high-volume makes, and the factory-level platforms for BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen and Porsche, so every module on the vehicle can be read, tested and coded. A J2534 pass-through interface handles programming where the manufacturer's software runs through one. A battery conductance tester, a charging-system analyzer, a fuel pressure gauge set, a cooling-system pressure tester, a smoke machine for vacuum leaks and a paint thickness gauge for inspections round out the test gear.

Then the hand tools and lifting equipment: a floor jack and rated stands, wheel chocks, torque wrenches calibrated for lug nuts and drain plugs, a creeper, a mat for the driveway, lighting for garages and early mornings. And the stock: batteries in the common group sizes in flooded and AGM, oil in the specifications the metro's engines need, filters, belts, tensioners, hoses, thermostats, coils, plugs, common sensors, terminal ends, fuses, relays, bulbs and the key blanks and fobs for the most common models.

Parts the van does not carry are ordered to the VIN and fitted on a return visit scheduled for the day they arrive, with the written range unchanged.

How does the visit work from the first message to the invoice?

You send the vehicle, the symptom and the location, and the reply confirms what the van will do, what it will cost as a range, and an arrival window. When the van leaves the previous job you get a real time by text. On arrival the technician tests the battery and charging system, reads the vehicle with the tool for its make, and confirms the cause at the vehicle rather than from the code.

Before any part is fitted you receive the findings and the range by text or email, with a note on what moves the figure inside it. You approve by reply. Where the part is in the van the repair follows immediately; where it must be ordered, the return visit is booked. The call-out portion of the visit is credited to the repair you approve.

The invoice itemizes the diagnosis, the parts by brand and number, the labor and the 2-year/24,000-mile warranty that covers them, with the measurements and readings that supported the repair. Old parts are left with you unless a core charge requires their return.

Which parts and fluids go into your vehicle?

Parts come from the manufacturers that supply the vehicle makers, in the specification the VIN calls for, and the estimate names the brand before you approve it. Where a genuine part from the dealer is the only correct choice, such as a control module coded to the VIN or a smart key for a make that rejects aftermarket fobs, the estimate says so and includes the lead time.

Fluids carry the manufacturer's specification in print on the container: oil to the approval the engine sheet names, coolant in the type the cooling system was built with, brake fluid in the DOT grade specified. Batteries are the chemistry the vehicle specifies, which means AGM wherever a manufacturer calls for it, registered and coded where the charging system expects it.

What the van does not use is the cheapest listing. A mobile repair that fails in a month costs the customer a second morning and the technician a second trip, and the parts policy exists to avoid both.

What does the warranty cover on a mobile repair?

Repairs performed at your location are covered for 2 years parts and 2 years labor, up to 24,000 miles, nationwide. Coverage starts on the invoice date and mileage and applies to the part fitted and the labor to fit it. A failure of the same part in that period is repaired again at no charge, including the trip.

The warranty does not cover a different part that fails later, damage from an accident or flooding, a battery drained by an accessory left on, or a repair you declined after the diagnosis. The invoice records what was and was not done so there is no argument later about which is which.

How does a service-area business handle booking, hours and languages?

There is no storefront to walk into, so every visit is booked. The van runs Mon-Fri: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM and Sat: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM; messages sent outside them are read when the day starts. No-starts and vehicles blocking a driveway are scheduled ahead of routine work, and arrival windows are confirmed by text with a real time when the van is on its way.

The van covers 30 miles around zip 75228, which takes in Dallas, Garland, Mesquite, Richardson, Plano, Irving, Carrollton, Rowlett, Rockwall, Grand Prairie, Arlington and Frisco and the cities between them. The service-area page lists every city and zip inside the radius with travel notes by corridor. Trips beyond the radius are quoted when you book.

Every step, from the first text to the explanation of the finished repair, can be handled in English or Spanish.

  • Technician sending the written range by text from the van door before any part is fitted at a Dallas driveway
  • Parts drawers inside the mobile mechanic van stocked with batteries, belts, coils, filters and oil for Dallas-Fort Worth visits
  • Pickup leaving a Dallas driveway for a road test with the diagnostic tool logging after a mobile repair
  • Crossover on jack stands in a Richardson office lot while the technician inspects the underside
  • Control module coding in progress through a pass-through interface from the van to a vehicle in a Frisco garage
  • Keys and the invoice handed back on the porch after a mobile repair in a Dallas-Fort Worth driveway
